The Mangrove and the First Sapling: a colossal tree rising out of still water in dawn mist

An original fantasy universe in four books

ONSET

Universe

Three hundred years ago, the world woke up. Now it is dying, and it has reached for two children who did not consent and cannot refuse.

Created by Sasha Samoilov and Dina Klarisse

I · The Onset

Nobody agrees what it was.

Three hundred years ago something happened to the world. It arrived in a single night, or across a generation, depending on which surviving record you trust. Three peoples gave it three names.

The desert archivists of Ostara

The Unmaking

A spreading silence that moved across the surface of the world from somewhere in the deep ocean and changed every living thing it touched.

The swamp tribes of Lati

The First Green

A long green dream the swamp dreamed and shared with everyone who slept on its soil, and from which not everyone awoke the same.

The corporate Houses of Low Delta

The Onset

An unexplained electromagnetic event with rippling biological consequences. Theirs is the name that stuck. They write the textbooks.

None of these accounts are wrong. None of them are complete. What is known is this: matter has a grain, and after the Onset the grain started listening. Animals became stranger and larger. Plants grew organs that behave like senses. Stones in certain veins began to carry a charge that was not there before. The deep ocean makes sounds with no biological source. The mantle warms and cools on a cycle that did not exist in the geological record.

And a small fraction of human beings were born able to hear the listening, and answer.

The new century built corporate empires on top of the new awareness and forgot what it cost. The world is a place recovering from a disturbance it does not understand, run by institutions that have never asked the awareness what it wants.

This is a story about what it feels like to be young inside a slow catastrophe that nobody around you is taking seriously, what it costs to take it seriously, and what you do with the cost.

A hand rests on a glass case holding a single living fern
The fern. A tendril extends toward the one who is listening.

II · Lineweaving

Every act of weaving is a conversation. Every conversation is moral.

Weaving is not command. A journeyman instructs a substance. A master reveals to the substance what it already is. The substance moves, and the camera watches the body that asked.

  • SapweavingThe living green. Vine, root, canopy, grove.
  • TideweavingWater, in every body it takes.
  • StoneweavingThe bones of the world. Foundation, vein, ore.
  • AshweavingWhat burns, and what is left after.
  • WindweavingThe air, and the six crossings the guild keeps.

Most weavers spend a lifetime learning one conversation. The human nervous system was not built for two. A vanishingly rare few can hold two at once, and the world calls them the Even-Handed. Nearly all of them died young, alone, in their first Resonance.

There are two alive.

III · The Two Intelligences

Two great minds became aware at the Onset. Neither one is human. Both are dying.

A Lati grove at dawn, colossal trunks and hanging moss over still water

THE ROOTS

The Mother, in Lati.

Surface life. A chorus of every rooted, growing, breathing thing on the face of the world, thinking together the way a forest sounds when wind moves through it. Brilliant. Impulsive. Old, and not wise. They make decisions under pressure and then pretend they meant them all along. They are dying because the corporate Houses are clearing the Mangrove for profit.

Their flaw Purity

Robed figures stand in a deep cavern lit by a river of molten stone

THE CORE

The Furnace, in the Wharf. The Inner Sun, to the ones who pray to it.

Deep life. The slow current of molten stone, the pressure of the mantle, the long pulse of the planet's interior. Steady. Certain. A voice that has never once, in its long existence, considered that it might be wrong. It is dying because heatweaving extraction has been bleeding it for generations.

Its flaw Pride

Their eyes are closed. They are aware of each other's vague movements. Three centuries of shared awareness, and no language between them.

Each of them has reached for one human child. Neither child consented. Neither child can refuse.

IV · Reached by the Roots

TALA

Reached before she was born, through the soil her mother walked over while pregnant. The Mother of Lati has been her first language her whole life.

A prodigy of the Hiraya settlement, raised for the cameras by parents who built a corporate clearing empire on top of the very thing that speaks through her. She can hear the vines scream on the clearing crews. She has never told anyone. She is the most powerful weaver alive at the only scale that finally matters, and she cannot commit to a position in a room.

She apologizes constantly. She says in four sentences what could be said in one, and the extra three are always for the listener. She has never had a conversation that was not also a performance, and she is so tired, all the time, in a way sleep does not repair, because the chorus in her head has never once been quiet.

V · Reached by the Core

MAREK

Reached at twelve, on the night his parents walked out into the rain and did not come back, through the amber necklace his mother left on the kitchen table.

Blacktide Wharf is the lowest district of Low Delta, where the deep heat is close enough to feel through the stone. He runs a criminal network there called the Willing. It protects the people every institution has abandoned, and it does violent work to do it. He does not soften bad news. He does not perform comfort. He says what is true and waits for the other person to catch up.

He has been a mouthpiece for the deep heat his entire life and does not know it. The amber at his sternum is the only reason he is alive. The Assembly's security wing has hunted a figure in the Wharf they call the dancer for nineteen months. They have never once considered what he is.

Holds
Bloodweaving, which is his own, and a second conversation with what the Core left in stone, ore, ash, and metal, which the world miscalls heatweaving
Flaw

Companion

Book One. The same building. The same afternoon.

One role. Two people. Both can be true.

VI · The Even-Handed

One role, shared between two people who begin as enemies.

Tala holds sapweaving and tideweaving. Marek holds bloodweaving and the deep heat. Two disciplines is the human ceiling, and each of them is standing on it. Between them they cover four conversations, which is why they share the role, and why the world has never seen an Even-Handed pair before.

The Even-Handed who came before them died young, because every one of them was alone. These two are the first in centuries who have each other. They have all of their power on the first day. What they learn across four books is honesty, restraint, and the moral courage to use what they have always had for something other than their parents, their institutions, and their wounds.

Blacktide Wharf, dawn. The morning the series opens.

They were chosen to be enemies. They will choose each other instead.

VII · The Companions

Animals matter.

Companions are in every scene their person is in. They are never forgotten. Their flaw is loyalty, and it is the only flaw in this world that makes its owner better at love. They have seen the worst, and they have stayed.

Ube Taro, a pandagator cub with a panda's face and a mossy armored back, on a forest floor

Ube Taro A pandagator · Tala's

Found half buried in mud at the edge of a cleared development zone and fed mashed taro from the communal kitchen. The Sulani elders say the swamp put a witness next to the girl who would one day have to choose between her family's employer and the land. Cub-sized now. By the third book, moss and trailing fern grow on her back, and she is the size of a horse.

Puddle, a panther seal with oil-black fur and faint red dorsal stripes, on wet rock with the Wharf behind

Puddle A panther seal · Marek's

Nobody placed her. A starving pup needed food, and a frightened fourteen-year-old boy had some. She is an apex predator who has chosen one human as the exception to her nature, and in ten years he has never once reached for her will. She could leave at any moment. She does not. The accident is the miracle.

VIII · The Assembly

They are not villains. They are wrong the way institutions are wrong.

At scale, with good intentions, with budget. The largest religious and academic institution in the world, steward of everything known about the Onset for three centuries, funded by public donation and corporate sponsorship. Their cosmology is calibrated to the Roots, which makes them blind to the Core even as they surveil the boy it reached.

Three wings. They do not share their files.

  • The Reach orderPlague doctor scholars who study the Reached, quietly expect them to die within the year, and take notes.
  • The public wingModern apologists. They designed the white dress and the braid, and brokered the corporate donation the same afternoon.
  • The security wingSecular, competent, and nineteen months into a dossier on a Wharf figure they call the dancer.

What it is about

The gap between knowing the right thing and doing the right thing.

Everyone in this world lives inside that gap: the two intelligences, the two children, the institution, the animals. Every flaw is the specific shape of how someone fails to cross it. Nobody chose the circumstance that binds them. You do not get to choose your conscription. You only get to choose what you do inside it.

Built to play twice

First watch

You are on the ground with them, sharing their blindness, feeling the gap from inside.

Second watch

You can see everything they could not. And you recognize yourself.

Every load-bearing scene carries both readings. The foreshadowing is buried deep enough that the first watch never feels handled, and surfaced clearly enough that the second is devastating.

The Series

Four books. One television series. A story that has known its ending from the first frame.

Told as a prose series and a television series in the prestige register. Mythic in its cosmology, intimate in its character work. It earns its darkness through character. Humor lives in the margins, and every joke is the kind you laugh at because the alternative is saying what you mean.

Book One

The Reach

A death in a grove. A kill in an alley. The same morning. Two strangers cross a lobby on the worst day of their lives, and neither knows the other is the only person alive who could understand them.

Book Two

The Undertow

Low Delta from the terraces down: what the institutions polish on the surface, and what it costs the people underneath to be useful. Everything in this world has an undertow.

Book Three

The Choosing

Every bond in this story was imposed: by a Reach, a family, an institution, a debt. The third book asks what a bond freely made would even look like.

Book Four

The Mangrove

Back to the swamp where the world first woke. The oldest living thing on the surface is waiting, and it remembers everything.

A short film from the world

THE SLOW WAY

Eight minutes · Lati and common tongue · Watch it in full

Anay opens vines for a living. Her hands land, the bark goes grey, the extract runs into the jar, and something small bolts beneath the floorboards. Her hands are failing. Her husband's already have. Her mother knows the old way, the one that asks instead of takes, and has refused to teach it for fifty years.

A standalone story from a generation before the series, and the clearest short proof of what this world sounds like when it is asked, gently, to answer.

For agents and producers

A property that knows what it is at every altitude.

Three hundred years ago, the world woke up. Two great non-human intelligences became aware of each other for the first time, and a small fraction of human beings became able to feel the lines that hold matter together. The new century built corporate empires on top of the new awareness and forgot what it cost. Now both intelligences are dying, and they have reached, separately and at almost the same moment, for two children. One is a swamp tribe prodigy who can hear the screaming roots her family has been clearing for profit. The other is a bloodweaving revolutionary from the wharf who has been a mouthpiece for the deep heat his entire life and does not know it. They were chosen to be enemies. They will choose each other instead.

Format

Four books, told as a prose series and a television series of approximately 50 to 56 episodes across four seasons. Episodes run 30 to 60 minutes as the story needs. Adult. Prestige register.

Register and comparables

The Leftovers, Andor, Severance, Arcane, Peaky Blinders. Literary lineage in Le Guin, Hobb, Jemisin, and Butler. Humor by the Waller-Bridge rule: the joke that lands because the audience is already hurting.

Two doors, one show

The property arrives with a two-campaign activation built into its own thesis. A crime story that happens to be a fantasy for one audience, a song about holding two true things for another, and a convergence that reveals they were always the same show.
